The legislative and policy-making branch of
Fenton’s municipal government is the Mayor and Board of Aldermen. The
Mayor is elected for a two-year term and the Board of Aldermen consists of eight
(8) members; two (2) aldermen from each of the four wards elected for two-year
terms.
Fenton is a 4th
class municipality. Under this system, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen
appoint a City Administrator, professional staff, and members of boards and
commissions. These appointments provide recommendations and advice to the
elected city officials.
The
primary function of the Board of Aldermen is to fulfill the City’s legislative
function, to establish policies and provide general direction for the City, and
to provide the City Administrator and operating departments with the resources
necessary to implement these policies.
The City
Administrator is responsible for coordinating the City’s day-to-day operations
and administration, under the direction of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen.
Duties include personnel and budget administration, inter-governmental
relations, and organizing and implementing the Board of Aldermen’s policies.
