Welcome to the website of Fenton, Missouri. Whether you are considering a visit to our community, plan to move here, or just want to learn more about your hometown, I want to thank you for taking the time to look at our website!
Fenton has a long history. Adjacent to the Meramec River, the riverbanks in this area were very fertile. This made the land appealing to the many Mississippian and other Mound Builder tribes in the area. Archeological finds in the area date back 900 years and more. During the time of the American Revolution and after, the area was widely inhabited. Both settlers and Native Americans chose this spot because of its numerous salt springs. Salt was a valued commodity during that period in America’s history.
William Lindsay Long came across the Meramec River in 1818 and founded Fenton. He designed the original eight square blocks that comprised the town. From these original eight square blocks, Fenton has grown into a city of over six square miles and more than 4,000 people. When Fenton was incorporated in 1948, its first mayor was Garrett Hitzert. Mr. Hitzert also owned the historic Navajo Hotel, which is still located in those original eight blocks known as “Olde Towne.”
Fenton’s government consists of a mayor and a board of aldermen. The city is divided into four wards, and each ward elects two aldermen. The Mayor is elected through a citywide election in odd-numbered years. We hold our meetings in the Fenton Government Center, which also houses the Fenton Municipal Court and the Police Department. We are served by the 3rd District, St. Louis County Police, who operate a dedicated Precinct in Fenton.
The City of Fenton is served by two school districts: Lindbergh and Rockwood. There is also one private school within Fenton City limits: St. Paul Catholic School.
Fenton has a large number of restaurants to satisfy every culinary whim. We have a vast array of shopping available in many commercial districts. Fenton has an abundance of trails, picnic areas and organized sports for the outdoor-minded in its parks. We have a state-of-the-art recreation center at RiverChase for those who prefer to do their workouts indoors. In addition, RiverChase offers numerous events, seminars, and classes for all ages throughout the year.
